Potter’s field at Bergen Pines?

In WNJ they talked about a potters field with over 500 graves behind the EMS HQ across the street from Bergen pines. I found it… and it’s been turned into a softball field. There are no markers, no evidence that this ever was a cemetery. I talked with a superintendent of the school that’s right next door. According to him no one even knew there was a potter field there till they went to clear out a wooded area as part of a landscaping project and “Oh look! headstones!” according to him when they were done… the area was just grass. He doesn’t know if the bodies were disintered or if they are still there, with no markers to indicate their presence.

Does anyone have any information on what happened here?

They are still there. Small numbered blocks in the grass next to the field

I’ve seen a few of the markers too, wandering one day. Not so much ON any softball field; more toward the school/Paskack Rd. end, by the fence. Didn’t know origin, thx.

small, in the grass, non-descript; I will try to get back there and photo/geo-coord a few for you. Quite a hidden story, if they are only the iceberg’s point….

  3. There is still a potters field in existence. It IS behind the EMS headquarters across the street, but only a few of the makers are visible. I have a picture if you’re still interested. The area is surrounded by a white vinyl fence and is pretty eerie because I don’t think many people know about it or frequent it…

      Hey Matt,
I know this area pretty well, but am having a hard time figuring out the location. Are you referring to the EMS training site behind the County Bldg and the Tech HS? I’m not aware of a softball field there.
      thanks, jim
