The penis and vagina sculptures

This sculpture sitson the lawn of the Rockland County Courthouse in Clarkstown, NY, but used to sit directly on the courthouse steps. It sat there for 20 years before someone noticed that the statue resembled a vagina. For twenty years folks thought it was abstract art, but once someone pointed it out, everybody recognized it (“OMG!”) so the embarrassed public officials moved it to a less traveled spot on the courthouse property….

Not far away is a statue that resembles a penis, but I have yet to find it. I have had no luck finding it so if anyone knows, please tell me so I can stop on by to document it. It’s supposed to be somewhere near Veterans Park in Orangetown.

I grew up in New City and actually, everyone in New City knew what it was and wanted to get rid of it when it first came up (not the 20 years listed in the article). It was always on the corner where it is now. I think people were upset that sculpture was approved as a miniature. (I think the sculpture was called something like mens desires). It cost the city around $150,000. It was to be dedicated to the firemen. There is a park across the street dedicated to a fallen firemen.

This was the inspiration for the EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND episode where Maria gives Raymond her ‘abstract’ sculpture.
