Bruce Springsteen named as other man in NJ divorce case

Judge will treat him just like any other witness

His songs champion the common man, and that’s exactly how a New Jersey judge plans to treat Bruce Springsteen, the accused homewrecker in a nasty New Jersey divorce case. The judge nixed a bid by Ann Kelly, whose husband named the Boss as the “other man,” to seal the proceedings. Tawdry details potentially involving the Garden State legend won’t be enough to keep a lid on the case, ruled Superior Court Judge Patricia Roe. “Family Court is not unique in presiding over cases that involve enormous, personal embarrassment,” Roe said. “Openness is the norm, not the exception.
“Mere embarrassment or a desire to avoid the potential criticism doesn’t suffice to make good cause.”

In pleading for secrecy, attorney Noel Tonneman told the judge, “There are going to be some very, very, very private details disclosed.” Springsteen denies intimate involvement with Kelly, and the judge didn’t mention him by name. Businessman Arthur Kelly, 45, claims his wife of 17 years committed adultery with Springsteen “at various times and places too numerous to mention.” He wants joint custody of their daughters, ages 13 and 10 and his soon-to-be ex to pay child support and for the kids’ college education.

After the brief hearing in the Toms River courthouse, neither Kelly nor his wife, who wore a severe black pantsuit and looked grim, would say anything. But Tonneman said, “My client denies the allegations…and we’d like the press to go away.” She said said Kelly was unable to return to the couple’s West Long Branch home because of swarming media. Arthur Kelly refused to say if he knew Springsteen. The Kellys marriage was marked by violence, and Ann recently filed a domestic-abuse complaint against her husband, according to her father, Steven Carton. The husband was charged with simple assault on March 3 and ousted from the family home in West Long Branch, police said. Information about disposition of case wasn’t immediately available. He now lives in Red Bank.

The 59-year-old Springsteen alluded to the case on his web site, telling fans, “I hesitate to use this Web site for anything personal … However, due to the unfounded and ugly rumors that have appeared in the papers over the last few days, I feel it shouldn’t pass without comment. Patti and I have been together for 18 years – the best 18 years of my life. Our commitment to one another remains as strong as the day we were married.”
The Boss, who has homes in pricey Rumson and Colts Neck, has strayed from marriage before. He was accused of seducing current wife Patti Scalifa, 53, in 1988 when she was a backup singer and he was still married to actress Julianna Phillips
