I would like to see a topic about Ground Observer Corps/Aircraft Warning Service/Operation Skysweeper, especitally the observer station in Mahwah,NJ. I understand that tens of thousands of volunteers worked at thses little stations around the US to spot low-flying aircraft for the Army/Air Force during WWII, and in the Cold War to up to 1958 Their history is somewhat lost in time, and apparently not well documented. I would like for people who worked in this volunteer capacity to step forward and tell their stories.

There are so many talented artists out in the workforce today that working in jobs that do not appreciate the work that they actually do. They work on logos and advertisements for companies but never really get the recognition that they deserve.

I’m Central NJ born & raised (North Plainfield/Dunellen/Piscataway/Manville), but moved to PA in 2003. I found your blog in a Google search for “Pattenburg Quarry,” which I’ve been telling my husband about for years, but finally had an urge to look up the entire story of. I used to go there quite often with an ex-boyfriend when I was in high school. He was an avid railfan.
Anyway, I’ve been reading random things & have several similar experiences/interests. I now live less than a half mile away from the above-mentioned Pennhurst, in Spring City, PA (I live on the East Vincent TWP. side). They actually opened it up as a haunted house for several weekends before Halloween this year, totally screwing up our local traffic patterns.
Years ago, I lived in Easton, PA, with two roommates & one of their orphaned younger brothers. We were completely without food one Christmas after bringing the boy to spend the holiday weekend with his relatives near Scranton, and no stores were open because of the the holiday. Fortunately, one of my roommates had an MRE that had been given to him by a very odd friend of his, whom he’d been friends with since childhood. He broke it out & the three of us split the rations for dinner. We still jokingly refer to it as being that years’ unusual “Christmas MRE.”
Anyway, thanks for sharing yor experiences in this blog. I’ve only just found it & I’m totally loving it!

I am a Pennhurst virgin, so to speak. I am deeply interested and fascinated with this place. My husband and I live in PA and are looking to explore the place with someone who knows where the hell they are going. Without that experienced guide I feel we will surely get lost and/or arrested. I just want to go, once, and experience it for all it is and remember it and feel its presence forever. Unfortunately I have become obsessed with getting in there. Just seeing one intriguing room that is sans graffiti and liquor bottles would be enough to make it completely worth the drive and the risk.

The 2 biggest threats to NJ in the next 50 years are sprawl and rising sea levels. The only solution to the sprawl that encroaches apon the eerie mysterious wilderness sites would be for all the people who would move into these intrusive new developments to move out west where the cost of living is much lower. It would’nt hurt either if Delaware and the Far Western tip of Pennsylvania to become one state.

ou’re apparently a sick maniac who likes to just walk around in search of abandoned buildings. I think that’s why I like this site so much. I’ve got all sorts of photos, but they’re from Brooklyn, and lord knows you can’t go in abandoned buildings here without getting killed by a crack addict or eaten by a CHUD.

I am at a local library right now to check out your site. My home is in the woods of atlantic county because I have chosen to leave society and live in the wilderness. There is some really wierd stuff in the woods of atlantic county. Some of which you would have never known exhisted. Haunted, wanderers, just plain unspeakable stuff. I am educated, I am not some wierd-o in the woods, just a simple, hippy type guy.

Glad you and others are keeping up your websites! I am obsessed with abandoned houses and barns. Did a lot of exploring when younger and these places are dissappearing. Currently I live in Evansville Indiana and there is not much here abandoned in the county, but we have some old derelict historical homes quickly being demolished.
You have a great site and I like the differing categories of odd and abandoned places. I am glad you have the time to keep this site going!
