Clinton Road

Clinton Road is the most legendary road in all NJ folklore. This 8 mile long road has no street lights and no cross roads for the majority of it’s path thru the woods of West Milford. There are so many stories about Clinton Road where does one even begin? Theres a ghost that will cause you to crash at Dead Man’s Curve. Cross Castle is was haunted. There are nazi’s in the woods. Also the KKK and witches. And rabid dogs. And let’s not forget that if you driving late at night you will be chased by a black pick up truck. To truly appreciate the area, read the Weird NJ page on it.

All the urban legends aside, there are some things that are true. Clinton Road is home to one of the last remaining Iron smelting furnaces from the colonial era. Surrounded by a fence (with gaping holes in it) it’s a relic from 200 years ago. It is tall, and it is creepy as hell. When I ducked inside the structure, I got the distinct feeling of entering a huge gaping maw, as the rocks that made the opening were smaller, numerous & of varied colors, giving the impression of a mouth of teeth….

Someone above me mentioned that they tried to drive down the road and a cop told them about an accident.
A girl I went to high school with got in a terrible accident on the road and a few of her friends were killed. This was maybe two years ago, possibly less. Seems like the same thing they were talking about.

I have been on this road many times and nothing has happened…at least to me. I’ve driven here by myself several times, gone hiking off one of the dirt trails (during the day the surrounding scenery is beautiful), found the furnace, some animal feces, and disposed bathroom appliances(?).

No one has really chased me on this road, maybe because over the past couple of years I have owned what are commonly referred to as inconspicuous family cars. However, I HAVE seen other people being chased by large trucks going the opposite direction. One of which was a small Saturn being horribly tailgated by a large truck just a couple feet behind it with its fog lights on, they both swerved onto my side of the road going at an insane speed. My boyfriend and I actually thought it was really funny; no one in their right mind would drive someone else to their death here – being friends with some locals, they confirmed that the chasing bandits are locals fucking with you just for shits and giggles.

However, one night last year we were going to a friend’s house up in Vernon and decided to take Clinton Road to see if it got us there any quicker (we were really sick of the 90-minute drive from where we live and were trying anything possible in an attempt to find a quicker route). Clinton Road was blocked off by a police car, so we pulled up beside the officer and he told us that there had been a fatal accident at Dead Man’s Curve. He then told us to take Berkshire Valley Road as a detour. I am pretty sure it was Berkshire Valley, it is towards the beginning of Clinton Road on the West Milford side, somewhat still near civilization.

Absolutly what I was thinking. Stop and pull your 357 and see if Mr. Spook hangs around. I have a feeling Mr. Spook will get the hades out of there spewing real rocks all over the initial stopped car.

All this clinton road bs is fake. I’ve been on it. Been down the dirt road to the left and nothing happened. I know people that used to have parties on it and nothing happened.

Hi, my name is Alex, When i was from the ages of 11-17 i always heard stories of clinton road. i live about 2 minutes away from the entrance of clinton road. I used to go there all the time with my friends. we used to test outt all the stories. the quarter over the bridge, the pickup truck, the castle, the furnance. I thought it was the coolest and scariest place ever. I talked to one of the locals and thats when i found out it was all fake. the pick up trucks are actually police and locals trying to scare the tourists off the road. and the quarter thing is not true. people stand under the bridge and throw coins back. People kill animals and leave their bones around. and the hellhound are actualy dogs with glowing eyes that were abused and left there. THe only thing there that is true is the furnance, the cemteary and the worship in santan. i was really bummed when i heard all of this. hope u repsond.

On February 29, 2004, 4 friends and I went to Clinton Rd at around 2 A.M. We were driving in a P.O.S car so this made the experience that much more scarier. Well everything was well until we started to come back. On our way back, I saw a gate I wanted to know more about. So the driver turned around and we went to explore. But to or luck, a truck (color unsure) was following us. We drove at about 60 MPH (the car couldn’t get much faster.) We somehow lost him. Now is were the story comes in: We stopped in front of Dead Mans Curve and were going to take a picture in front of the graffiti wall, when all of a sudden we saw what appeared to be a police car with the blue lights on, coming towards us. We ran towards the our car, and all of a sudden the speeding car glazed the graffiti wall, lost control and hit the opposing wall on the other side of the bridge. We thought they were dead. Turns out that it wasn’t a cop but a kid with a blue fireman’s light. They were injured not to much but the car was totaled. Some very nice elder man came and helped us move the car with his pickup and chain and got that to the side of the rode. We drove the 3 kids back to there town of Butler and headed home. We were in shook about this all night and still are cause if we didn’t move we were definitely dead. Included is a picture of something I treasure and that is the CLINTON RD and Warwick TPK sign we found on the street.

hi I have been going to Clinton rd for 10 years now and I could not find the cemetery at all. I know its on the beginning but anyway. I have tons of Clinton rd stories but nothing like people say that’s all lies!! we have walked threw the woods and have found many grave sites deep deep in the woods in the center of the road. one time we drove up a dirt path that now has a tree blocking it but we came up to a fence and it went down like a cliff we looked down and there was sum type of cult like kkk or sumthin bomb fires and lots of people! we got out of there cause there was only 3 of us. we never got to drive back up that trail cause now there is a tree in the way. I also have a question for you have u ever drove up the dirt path on the way back to 23 its on the right a steep dirt road? ok well thank you for reading this and if you would please respond I would appreciate it greatly.
